Chinese technology giant Xiaomi made a decisive entry into the electric vehicle (EV) arena, revealing its inaugural electric car at the Stride launch event in Beijing on December 28. This much-anticipated unveiling marked Xiaomi’s ambitious goal of ascending among the top five global automakers. The SU7, the brand’s premier all-electric sedan, took center stage at the international EV Technology Launch event in Beijing, signaling Xiaomi’s foray into the EV market.

The Xiaomi SU700 will be available in three variants: SU7, SU7 Pro, and SU7 Max. In terms of color choices, the sedan will offer three exterior paint schemes — Aqua Blue, Mineral Gray, and Verdant Green. The SU7 will be contract-manufactured by Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. Ltd (BAIC) on behalf of Xiaomi in China. The coupe electric sedan will be retailed under the company’s popular smartphone brand Mi.

During the event, Xiaomi’s Chief Executive Lei Jun expressed, “By working hard over the next 15 to 20 years, we will become one of the world’s top 5 automakers, striving to lift China’s overall automobile industry”. Jun also emphasized that the forthcoming SU7 is “a dream car comparable to Porsche and Tesla”.

Lei put Xiaomi cars at the forefront of the industry by showcasing their autonomous driving capabilities during the Beijing launch event. As a result, the SU7 has Lidar – based autonomous driving features like adaptive cruise control and self-parking, which are all powered by the brand’s HyperOS operating system.

With two battery pack options, Xiaomi’s SU7 boasts a versatile powertrain lineup. Higher trims come with a larger 101kWh CTB (Cell to Body) battery pack from CATL, while entry-level trims use a 73.6kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery sourced from BYD. A massive 150kWh battery pack is available for the V8 variant, which is scheduled to launch later. With an estimated range of up to 800 km on a single charge, the SU7 promises extensive driving capability.

The sedan comes with two different powertrain options: a single motor and a dual motor setup.
