Hero MotoCorp stands as one of India’s leading motorcycle producers, with a broad range of offerings spanning city-centric models, scooters, and utility vehicles, catering to a diverse customer base. During the Hero World 2024 event, the introduction of the Surge 32 marked a significant milestone as the first of its kind from a well-established, mainstream manufacturer.

Surge claims that transforming the scooter into a rickshaw takes only three minutes. The process involves inserting the scooter into the front of the rickshaw, where the scooter’s front wheel manages steering for the rickshaw. In this configuration, the scooter’s rear wheel remains unused and rests on the rickshaw’s platform. Each vehicle, the scooter, and the rickshaw, operates with its own separate motor and battery. They are connected electronically, enabling the driver to utilize the scooter’s handlebar and controls to operate the rickshaw. Quite impressive, isn’t it?

Drawing inspiration from Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight’ trilogy, the EV is fashioned after the ‘Batmobile’ and engineered for dual functionality. It serves as a rickshaw for commercial purposes and can effortlessly transform into a high-performance scooter for navigating urban traffic with ease.

Performance

Regarding performance specifications, the S32 scooter boasts a power of up to 6 kW, equivalent to about 8 horsepower, while the rickshaw, designed to handle heavier loads, features a 10 kW output, roughly 13.5 horsepower. Surge intends to utilize established battery technology from Hero’s EV subsidiary, Vida. Additionally, Surge aims to introduce various versions of the rickshaw tailored to the requirements and preferences of customers. These include open-type rickshaws with a pickup truck-inspired design, as well as closed-type designs intended for transporting passengers, which are currently in the development phase.

In essence, the S32 comprises two primary parts: an independent electric scooter and a chassis featuring two rear wheels but no front wheel. Thus, purchasers of the S32 are essentially acquiring a versatile two-in-one vehicle. Furthermore, the rickshaw boasts a maximum load capacity of 500 kg, rendering it suitable for a wide range of commercial endeavors.

What’s Inside the Cabin?

Within the EV’s interior, Hero Motocorp has incorporated amenities including a windscreen, lighting fixtures, optional weather-resistant soft doors, LED headlights, indicators, speedometer, switchgear, digital instrumentation, and more. When configured as a three-wheeler, the scooter’s handlebars and controls serve the functions of steering, braking, and accelerating.

Release Date and Future Plans

While the S32 is still in its conceptual stage, Hero has collaborated with the government to establish a novel vehicle classification known as L2-5. It’s important to highlight that currently, the Surge S32 remains in the concept stage, with no precise launch date announced. Nonetheless, the fact that Hero has introduced a new vehicle category specifically for the S32 suggests a strong commitment to transforming the concept into a tangible product.
